Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Expert surgical and medical interventions delivered with compassionate, patient-first care to help you regain your health and quality of life.

Overview

When severe shoulder pain prevents you from lifting your arm to comb your hair, reaching for a high shelf, or getting a peaceful night's sleep, it may be time to consider advanced surgical options.

**Shoulder Replacement Surgery** is a highly effective procedure to relieve pain and restore motion in a damaged shoulder joint. Depending on the condition of your rotator cuff tendons, our surgeons may perform a Traditional Total Shoulder Replacement or a Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement.

At Prakash Hospital, our specialized upper extremity surgeons provide personalized care to ensure your shoulder functions smoothly and painlessly once again.

Why is it Done?

The most common reasons for shoulder replacement include:
  • Severe Osteoarthritis: The "wear-and-tear" arthritis that destroys the shoulder cartilage.
  • Rotator Cuff Tear Arthropathy: A specific type of severe arthritis that develops after a massive, long-standing rotator cuff tear. (This usually requires a *Reverse* Shoulder Replacement).
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: Chronic inflammation that damages the joint lining.
  • Complex Fractures: Severe shattering of the upper arm bone that cannot be fixed with plates and screws.

What to Expect

Before the Surgery: Comprehensive imaging, including X-rays and often a CT scan, is done to create a 3D model of your shoulder, allowing the surgeon to plan the exact size and angle of the implants.

During the Procedure: The surgery takes about 2 hours. In a traditional replacement, the damaged ball is replaced with a metal ball, and the socket is fitted with a smooth plastic cup. In a reverse replacement (used when tendons are torn), the anatomy is literally reversed—the metal ball is attached to the shoulder blade, and the plastic socket is attached to the arm bone.

After the Surgery: Your arm will be placed in a sling to protect the repair. You will stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days while our team manages your pain and begins gentle passive motion exercises.

Risks & Benefits

The Benefits:

The most profound benefit is dramatic pain relief, especially at night. Most patients also experience a massive improvement in their ability to perform daily self-care tasks.

Understanding the Risks:

Risks include infection, nerve injury, shoulder stiffness, and implant loosening over time. Following your post-operative sling and physical therapy protocols is vital to preventing complications.

Recovery Profile

Shoulder recovery is a slow and deliberate process.

You will wear a sling for 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, you must not actively lift your arm. Our physiotherapists will move your arm for you (passive motion) to prevent stiffness without straining the healing tissues.

After the sling is removed, you will begin active movement exercises, followed by strengthening. Full recovery, where you have regained maximum strength and range of motion, can take 6 to 12 months, but the pain relief is usually noticed within the first few weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Reverse Shoulder Replacement?

If your rotator cuff tendons are severely torn, a regular replacement won't work because there are no tendons to lift the arm. A reverse replacement changes the mechanics of the shoulder so that your larger deltoid muscle does the lifting instead.

Can I play sports after a shoulder replacement?

Low-impact sports like swimming, golf, or light tennis are usually fine after full recovery. High-impact contact sports or heavy weightlifting should be avoided to prevent implant failure.
