Uterine fibroids are extremely common, non-cancerous muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus. While many women have small fibroids with no symptoms, they can sometimes grow very large or numerous, causing excruciating pelvic pressure, heavy menstrual flooding, severe anemia, and problems getting pregnant.

While a hysterectomy cures fibroids by removing the whole uterus, many women wish to preserve their uterus for future pregnancies or personal preference.

**Myomectomy** is a highly specialized, fertility-preserving surgery designed to meticulously carve out and remove only the fibroids, while expertly stitching the healthy uterine muscle back together. At Prakash Hospital, our skilled surgeons perform myomectomies using both advanced laparoscopic and traditional open techniques, depending on the size and location of your fibroids.

The surgical approach depends on the size, number, and location of the fibroids.

Laparoscopic Myomectomy: For smaller or fewer fibroids, the surgeon uses tiny abdominal incisions and a camera. The fibroids are detached and then cut into smaller pieces (morcellation) to be removed through the tiny incisions. This offers a fast recovery.

Open Myomectomy (Laparotomy): If the fibroids are very large, very deep in the uterine wall, or too numerous (e.g., more than 4 or 5), the surgeon must make a larger bikini-line incision. This allows them to manually feel the uterus, remove every deep fibroid, and meticulously stitch the uterine muscle back together layer by layer to ensure it is strong enough to carry a future pregnancy.
