Fibroid Removal (Myomectomy)

Expert surgical and medical interventions delivered with compassionate, patient-first care to help you regain your health and quality of life.

Overview

Uterine fibroids are extremely common, non-cancerous muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus. While many women have small fibroids with no symptoms, they can sometimes grow very large or numerous, causing excruciating pelvic pressure, heavy menstrual flooding, severe anemia, and problems getting pregnant.

While a hysterectomy cures fibroids by removing the whole uterus, many women wish to preserve their uterus for future pregnancies or personal preference.

**Myomectomy** is a highly specialized, fertility-preserving surgery designed to meticulously carve out and remove only the fibroids, while expertly stitching the healthy uterine muscle back together. At Prakash Hospital, our skilled surgeons perform myomectomies using both advanced laparoscopic and traditional open techniques, depending on the size and location of your fibroids.

Why is it Done?

Myomectomy is the surgery of choice for women with symptomatic fibroids who wish to keep their uterus. Indications include:
  • Heavy Menstrual Bleeding: Flooding that does not respond to medications and causes severe anemia (low blood count).
  • Pelvic Pain and Pressure: Large fibroids pressing on the bladder (causing constant urination) or the rectum (causing severe constipation or back pain).
  • Infertility or Recurrent Miscarriage: Fibroids distorting the uterine cavity, preventing an embryo from implanting or growing properly.

What to Expect

The surgical approach depends on the size, number, and location of the fibroids.

Laparoscopic Myomectomy: For smaller or fewer fibroids, the surgeon uses tiny abdominal incisions and a camera. The fibroids are detached and then cut into smaller pieces (morcellation) to be removed through the tiny incisions. This offers a fast recovery.

Open Myomectomy (Laparotomy): If the fibroids are very large, very deep in the uterine wall, or too numerous (e.g., more than 4 or 5), the surgeon must make a larger bikini-line incision. This allows them to manually feel the uterus, remove every deep fibroid, and meticulously stitch the uterine muscle back together layer by layer to ensure it is strong enough to carry a future pregnancy.

Risks & Benefits

The Benefits:

Myomectomy provides immense relief from heavy bleeding and pelvic pressure while preserving your uterus and your ability to have children in the future.

Understanding the Risks:

Because the uterus is highly vascular, myomectomy carries a higher risk of significant blood loss than a hysterectomy. Our team is fully prepared for this. Additionally, removing fibroids weakens the uterine wall; therefore, any future pregnancies may need to be delivered via C-section to prevent the uterus from rupturing during labor.

Recovery Profile

Recovery depends heavily on the surgical approach.

Laparoscopic: You will stay in the hospital for 1-2 days and return to normal activities in 2 to 4 weeks.

Open (Abdominal): You will stay in the hospital for 2-4 days. Because a larger abdominal incision was made, recovery takes 4 to 6 weeks. You must strictly avoid heavy lifting to allow the abdominal muscles and the deep uterine incisions to heal properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can fibroids grow back after a myomectomy?

Yes, it is possible. The surgery removes all the fibroids present at that time, but it does not stop your body from potentially growing new fibroids in the future.

How long should I wait to get pregnant after a myomectomy?

Your uterus needs time to heal and form a strong scar where the fibroids were removed. We generally advise waiting at least 3 to 6 months before trying to conceive.
