Endometrial Ablation

Expert surgical and medical interventions delivered with compassionate, patient-first care to help you regain your health and quality of life.

Overview

For some women, periods are not just an inconvenience—they are debilitating. Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) that lasts for weeks, floods through clothing, and causes severe anemia can completely derail your life.

While a hysterectomy is a permanent cure for heavy bleeding, it is a major surgery. If you have completed your family and want a less invasive option, **Endometrial Ablation** is a fantastic alternative.

This is a quick, minimally invasive procedure performed at Prakash Hospital that permanently destroys (ablates) the endometrium—the inner lining of the uterus that bleeds every month. For most women, this drastically reduces their menstrual flow to just light spotting, or stops their periods entirely, without the need for major abdominal surgery.

Why is it Done?

Endometrial ablation is specifically indicated for women who suffer from abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding that:
  • Requires changing pads or tampons every hour or two.
  • Lasts longer than 8 days.
  • Causes severe anemia (low iron levels in the blood) leading to chronic fatigue.
  • Has not responded to medical treatments like birth control pills or IUDs.
Note: This procedure is NOT for women who still wish to become pregnant, or for women who have uterine cancer or very large fibroids.

What to Expect

Before the Procedure: We will perform a biopsy of the uterine lining to ensure there are no precancerous or cancerous cells present before destroying the tissue.

During the Procedure: This is a short procedure (often taking less than 15 minutes) performed under general anesthesia or heavy sedation. There are no incisions. A slender wand is passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. The wand then uses extreme heat, radiofrequency energy, or heated fluid to safely burn away the entire inner lining of the uterus.

After the Procedure: The tools are removed, and you will wake up in recovery. Because there are no surgical incisions, you will go home the same day.

Risks & Benefits

The Benefits:

Ablation offers a rapid return to normal life. It is highly successful; the vast majority of women experience significantly lighter periods, and nearly half stop having periods altogether.

Understanding the Risks:

Risks are low but include infection, bleeding, or accidental puncture of the uterus. Importantly, pregnancy after ablation is highly dangerous (due to the damaged lining being unable to support a placenta), so reliable contraception or sterilization (like a tubal ligation) must be used afterward.

Recovery Profile

Recovery is very fast.

You will experience strong, period-like cramping for the first 24 to 48 hours, which is easily managed with pain medication. You will also have a watery, sometimes bloody discharge that can last for a few weeks as the destroyed lining sheds from the body.

Most women feel perfectly fine and return to work and normal activities within 2 to 3 days. It may take a few months to see the final, permanent result on your menstrual cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does endometrial ablation cause menopause?

No. The procedure only destroys the lining of the uterus, not the ovaries. Your ovaries will continue to produce hormones normally, so you will not experience hot flashes or enter menopause until your natural time.

Can I still get pregnant after an ablation?

While it is unlikely, it is possible, but it is extremely dangerous for both the mother and baby. You must use reliable birth control or undergo a sterilization procedure (like tubal ligation or your partner getting a vasectomy) after having an ablation.
