Overview

Some skin complaints are hard to put into words. Your face looks tired and a shade darker than it used to, and make-up sits unevenly, though nothing is exactly wrong. Often it is a build-up of dead cells on the surface, with a little tanning and a few old marks.

Microdermabrasion removes part of that dead outer layer (the stratum corneum) by mechanical exfoliation. A handheld device either sprays fine crystals onto the skin or uses a roughened diamond tip, and gentle suction lifts the loosened cells away as it moves. There is no acid and no needle. Because it only works on the very top of the skin, it is one of the mildest resurfacing treatments there is.

The effect is modest. After a session your skin usually looks brighter and feels smoother, and a course can soften mild tanning, rough texture and very light marks. It does little for pitted acne scars, deep wrinkles or melasma, and the effect fades within weeks without maintenance and daily sunscreen. For those problems a peel, microneedling or laser usually does more.

At Prakash Hospital, cosmetic treatment starts with a dermatologist's assessment in our skin and hair department. We check your skin type and what lies behind the dullness or marks, then tell you honestly whether microdermabrasion is worth it for you, or whether a chemical peel or another option would suit your skin better.

Who it helps

Microdermabrasion suits surface concerns in people who want a visible freshening with no time off. It is often a starter treatment, or one part of a wider plan.

  • Dull, rough or uneven skin texture
  • Mild sun tanning on the face, neck or hands
  • Flat, light marks left by old pimples
  • Clogged pores, blackheads and whiteheads
  • Very fine lines, as a mild smoothing treatment
  • Freshening the skin a few days before an event

Is it right for you?

Usually a good fit

  • Your concern is on the surface, such as dullness, mild tanning or light marks
  • You want little or no downtime
  • Your skin isn't inflamed or broken out at the moment

May not be suitable

  • Active, inflamed acne with pus-filled spots, which abrasion can spread
  • Rosacea, eczema, psoriasis or a rash on the face during a flare
  • Cold sores, warts or a skin infection on the area, until treated
  • Recent isotretinoin, until your dermatologist says the skin has recovered
  • Deep scars, melasma or deep wrinkles, where it won't help much

Treatment options

Crystal microdermabrasion

Fine crystals, usually aluminium oxide, are blown across the skin and vacuumed back up with the dead cells. The exfoliation is slightly stronger. Loose crystals can irritate the eyes, so you wear eye protection.

Diamond-tip microdermabrasion

A wand with a rough, diamond-coated tip abrades the skin while suction clears the debris. With no loose particles it is easier to use close to the eyes and nose, and tips of different coarseness let the dermatologist control the depth.

Hydradermabrasion

Some devices combine exfoliation with a stream of cleansing and hydrating serums. It is gentler still and often sold as a facial, but the exfoliation is lighter.

Before you start

  • Avoid sun tanning for a week or two before, and wear sunscreen daily
  • Stop retinoid creams, exfoliating acids and scrubs 3 to 5 days before, or as your dermatologist advises
  • Don't wax, thread, bleach or use hair-removal creams on the area for about a week before
  • Tell us about cold sores, recent isotretinoin, blood thinners, or any skin condition you're being treated for
  • If you have diabetes, say so. Gentler settings are used, because skin heals more slowly when sugars run high
  • Come without make-up if you can
  • Book it 3 to 5 days before an event, not the day before, in case of redness

What happens in a session

  1. 01

    Cleansing

Your skin is cleansed to remove oil and make-up. You wear eye pads or goggles if crystals are used.

  2. 02

    Passing the handpiece

The dermatologist moves the handpiece over each area in smooth strokes, usually two or three passes. You feel a scratchy, sucking pull, but it isn't painful.

  3. 03

    Adjusting as they go

Suction and pressure are kept low on thin skin near the eyes and on brown skin prone to marks, and turned up on rougher areas such as the nose and chin.

  4. 04

    Moisturiser and sunscreen

The skin is wiped clean, then a soothing moisturiser and sunscreen go on. You can carry on with your day.

Benefits and risks

Benefits

  • Brighter, smoother-feeling skin, often visible after the first session
  • Helps fade mild tanning and light marks over a course
  • Unclogs pores and reduces blackheads
  • No needles or acid, and no downtime
  • A low-risk choice for people wary of peels or lasers

Possible risks

  • Redness and a warm, windburnt feeling for a few hours
  • Dryness or light flaking for a day or two
  • Small red streaks or pinpoint bruises from strong suction, which fade in a few days
  • Dark patches from irritation, more likely in brown skin if treatment is too vigorous or you go into the sun soon after
  • Spread of cold sores, warts or acne infection if active spots are treated

After your session

Most people go straight back to work.

  1. 01

    The first day

Skin may be pink and slightly tight. Use a gentle cleanser and moisturiser, leave out scrubs and retinoids for 2 to 3 days, and hold off make-up for a few hours if you can.

  2. 02

    The first week

Be strict with sunscreen, and cover your face in strong sun or on a two-wheeler. Leave waxing and threading of the treated area for a few days.

  3. 03

    Over the course

Sessions 2 to 4 weeks apart give the skin time to recover. Brightness shows straight away. Changes in tanning and texture build over 4 to 6 sessions.

  4. 04

    Maintenance

The effect fades as the skin renews itself, so people who like it tend to repeat a session every month or two, with daily sunscreen in between.

When to call your doctor

  • Raw, weeping or crusted patches after a session
  • Redness or pain that lasts beyond 2 days or keeps spreading
  • Small blisters around the lips, which can mean a cold sore flare
  • Pus, swelling or fever
  • Dark patches appearing in the weeks after treatment

Other options

Chemical peel

Does more for pigmentation, acne and melasma, because the acid acts evenly and can go slightly deeper. Read about the chemical peel.

Microneedling or laser resurfacing

Better for acne scars and deeper texture problems, because they stimulate new collagen below the surface. See acne scar treatment.

Home care

A mild exfoliating cleanser, a moisturiser and daily sunscreen give some of the same brightening over time, without clinic visits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about Microdermabrasion at Prakash Hospital, Noida.

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

No. Most people describe a scratchy, pulling feeling. The skin around the nose and upper lip can feel a little sensitive.

Is it the same as a parlour facial?

Some parlours use similar machines. The difference is who looks at your skin first. A dermatologist checks whether dullness or marks have a medical cause, such as melasma or a fungal infection, and sets the machine for your skin type so it doesn't darken.

How soon will I see results?

Skin usually looks brighter and feels smoother the same day. Changes in tanning, texture and marks build up over a course of 4 to 6 sessions.

Will it remove my acne scars?

Not pitted ones. Microdermabrasion only reaches the surface, so at most it softens flat marks and very shallow scars. Deeper scars need microneedling, laser or other scar treatments.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

It is generally considered low risk, since no chemical or medicine is involved. Skin darkens easily in pregnancy, though, and some women prefer to wait. Check with your dermatologist first.

Can I have it before my wedding?

Yes, it is one of the safer options close to an event. Have your last session 3 to 5 days before the day so any redness has settled, and don't try it for the first time in the final week.
