Total Hip Replacement Surgery

Expert surgical and medical interventions delivered with compassionate, patient-first care to help you regain your health and quality of life.

Overview

The hip is one of the body's largest weight-bearing joints. When it becomes diseased or injured, every step can send sharp, debilitating pain radiating through your groin, thigh, or lower back.

**Total Hip Replacement Surgery** is a highly successful orthopedic procedure that replaces the damaged ball-and-socket joint of the hip with a durable, artificial prosthesis. This surgery is renowned worldwide for its ability to dramatically relieve pain and restore a normal, active lifestyle.

At Prakash Hospital, our expert joint replacement surgeons utilize the latest minimally invasive techniques to ensure your new hip feels stable, natural, and strong.

Why is it Done?

Total Hip Replacement is typically recommended when joint damage severely interferes with your quality of life. Common indications include:
  • Osteoarthritis: Age-related wear and tear of the hip cartilage.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune disease causing chronic joint inflammation.
  • Avascular Necrosis (AVN): Bone death caused by inadequate blood supply to the hip ball, often leading to joint collapse.
  • Hip Fractures: Severe injuries resulting from falls, especially in the elderly.

What to Expect

Before the Surgery: You will have a thorough preoperative evaluation. We will use X-rays or MRI scans to precisely plan the sizing and positioning of your custom implants.

During the Procedure: Under spinal or general anesthesia, the surgeon removes the damaged femoral head (the ball) and the damaged cartilage from the acetabulum (the socket). The artificial socket is securely placed in the pelvis, and the artificial ball is attached to a stem inserted into your thigh bone. The procedure usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours.

After the Surgery: You will be carefully monitored. Thanks to modern surgical approaches that spare major muscles, many patients are able to stand and bear weight on their new hip on the very same day of surgery.

Risks & Benefits

The Benefits:

The primary benefit is the near-total elimination of hip pain. You will also experience a massive improvement in your range of motion, allowing you to walk, climb stairs, and sleep without discomfort.

Understanding the Risks:

Risks include hip dislocation (though very rare with modern techniques), infection, blood clots, and leg length inequality. Our rigorous surgical planning and post-operative protocols are designed to minimize these risks significantly.

Recovery Profile

Recovery is often faster than patients expect. Most stay in the hospital for 2 to 4 days.

You will work with our physiotherapists daily to learn how to safely move, sit, and walk with your new hip. You will be given specific "hip precautions" (such as not crossing your legs or bending past 90 degrees) to prevent dislocation during the first 6 weeks of healing.

With dedication to your rehabilitation exercises, you can expect to resume most normal daily activities within 4 to 6 weeks, and achieve full recovery within 3 to 6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a hip replacement last?

Modern hip implants are incredibly durable, often lasting 20 to 25 years or more. Avoiding high-impact sports (like jogging or basketball) can help extend the life of the implant.

Will I set off metal detectors at the airport?

Yes, the metal in your artificial hip may trigger security scanners. You can easily inform the security personnel that you have a joint replacement; you do not need a special medical card.

When can I sleep on my side after hip surgery?

You should sleep on your back with a pillow between your legs for the first 6 weeks. After that, your doctor will usually clear you to sleep on your unoperated side, still using a pillow for support.
